Musicology and music journalism are rarely thought of in congruous terms. The tools of musicology are infinitely useful in our search for understanding of the art form.

However, the complexity these tools are framed in is highlights the exclusionary nature of academia.

Everyone listens to music (intentionally or unintentionally). Yet, most people do not think of it as portraying meaning as we do with film, visual art and literature.

Musicological endeavour helps us understand how music is made, why it is made and why we like it.

Here you can read some of my academic essays, but also my thoughts on music, using the tools of musicology in a much more casual, journalistic context.
